• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX Batch Convert

Hi Arno,

I'm wondering if I'm the only one experiencing a crash when using the batch converter in MCX? This is what I'm doing:

1) Selecting Batch Convert from the Wizards menu
2) Adding the BGL file (containing multiple MDL files) in to the input
3) Adding "Assign new GUID"
4) Selecting output folder, Export Scenery and "FSX BGL file (BGL)" Writer
5) Process

Result:
MCX crashed after hitting "Process".

Thanks!
Russ

And what error message do you get?

I'll try to replicate your actions later when I'm behind my FS PC.

Hi Arno,

Here are the details:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

Hi Arno,

Did you get a chance to look at this? I'm just wondering if it's something stupid I've done. :D

Thanks,
Russ

Hi,

No, not yet. Been quite busy the last evenings.

Which version of MCX are you using? I remember I fixed a similar bug a month or two ago or so.

OK, that should be new enough. Hopefully I have time tonight to check it.

Hi Russ,

I finally had the time to check this issue. You found a bug. That makes me wonder how few people actually use the batch convert wizard to export scenery :scratchch.

I have fixed it now, so grab the new release tomorrow and it should work as expected.

Thanks a lot Arno! It's much appreciated!

If people don't use it, they're missing out on an incredibly useful feature. I think I use that and the ground poly wizard most. :)

Thanks again,
Russ

I think it was only the export scenery that was broken, so the export objects might be used more often.

I think I tested them all now, but let me know if you still have issues.

Just for your information:

I do not use the batch convert very often but there is also another option that is much more interesting and that I hear no one talk about, and that is the optimizer.
Most of the times you can avoid using the batch converter when you first use the optimizer!!!

I don't see how those two are related. The batch converter is to process multiple objects at once and make certain changes quickly to all of them. The optimizer is to minimize drawcalls within one model. So it has a very different purpose.

Then I never knew what the batch converter was about till now:eek:.
Just thought it was to put several smaller textures onto a bigger texture sheet in a (one) model and thereby minimizing the draw calls???

No, that's what the drawcall optimizer (part of the material editor) does. The Batch Convert Wizard is in the Wizard menu (like the GPW is).

I am getting (prematurely:alert:;):)) old:(.
I did not even know it was there because I never noticed:rolleyes:, go figure that!
I think I am in need of a manual or else some new grey cells.
Thanks, Arno.

PS: I am still experimenting with those smileys to help me to convey what I mean. But maybe that is another sign of growing old?

Yes, I really need to make an updated manual and a stable 1.4 release. If only I could find some time for it...
