• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Blender <-> FSX MDL

hi after some help am trying to find a version of blender that supports .dds textures if any one can recommend one and where to down load that would help thanks .

Hi,

Have Googled a little bit under "Blender and .dds support" and found this on a forum:

Don't you mean 2.45?
Holy crap! I wasn't aware of this update. I'll install it and see how it goes with DDS

Mmph!, you are using the latest version and there isn't DDS support?

Hi, I've downloaded the 492_win32-vc (and all other SVN builds from there onwards) build from graphicall and it had full DDS support.

2.45 has DDS?

wow! I got to go and try this :D

So, maybe that's helpfull ?

Has there been any more progress with this tool? With the demise of the ACES team we are seriously looking at moving to X-Plane and would like to convert our existing FSX and FS9 aircraft over. Anything that would keep us from doing all from scratch would be great.

What's the rush? FS9 and FSX aren't going anywhere. There are still tens of thousands of satisfied users out there...

As you can tell, I haven't been able to find time to give these scripts much attention.

My original intention was to create a set of Blender scripts that would import and export MDL files. So the scripts currently aren't ideal for converting models to X-Plane - they import features (eg specular maps) which aren't supported by X-Plane and which will confuse the Blender X-Plane exporter scripts.

I'll re-purpose the scripts to import MDLs in a form suitable for subsequent export to X-Plane. Actually this simplifies things for me, since it was the export to MDL that I was having difficultly with.

Of course this will only deal with the visual model and won't help with either the cockpit instruments or the flying model.
And I won't be able to import animations - X-Plane and MSFS animation systems are too different so animations will have to be re-created in Blender.

Marginal, that sounds great. Understand about the limitations. It will still save lots of work.

Bill, it is not about rushing. It's about planning ahead. Not only that if we have the means to create content for both sims then all the better.

man, blender2fsx is just what i needed, thank you SO MUCH!
but i have just a question: how to manually install it? since the installer doesn't seems to work on windows 7.
also, do i need python installed? cuz blender can't detect python installation.
thanks again.

hi!

is there someone in here???

Well, I've been looking all over the net and it seems that Blender2FSX isn't working well.

Just wanted to confirm that.

Marginal! are you still working on this???

I've spent hours working on a model for an airport project that i'm starting, textured it, and it's not working.
Actually I could export the model with a simple material and see it in FSX, but if it's textured it doesn't work.

Blender is great software and working in gmax is painful! (IMHO) so, if I don't find how to work between blender and fsx I think i'll give up.

I hope there's a reply soon.

Thanks!

GMax is nowhere near as painful as trying to get the Blender2FSX stuff working... :D

hey guys, im new to this community and already need your help.....well actually thats why im here.....
i wanted to ask, if there is a way to convert the .mdl files of DOWNLOADED FSX Planes to 3DS files. Because I have an aircraft but Blender cant read the .mdl file.
Thank you!!!!

Greetz,

Hi,

My ModelConverterX tool can read some parts of the FSX MDL information and save it to 3DS. But what are you trying to achieve with this? It is not allowed to edit somebody else's work.

Hey is there any update on this exporter? I absolutely HATE gmax just cant work with it at all since i started on Blender and i really need a plugin that aside from exporting FS9/FSX MDL, can deal with:

Animations
Attach Points
Platforms
material settings

Updates???

O yeah if it can also deal with placing gauges in the directly in the VC in the MDL file

Ok... How about this. Gmax -> Blender -> XP-9

Is anyone doing this? Can an X file go into Blender?

From my limited testing, X files even parse through MakeMdl2002 !

It seems that we don't especially need FS9 or FSX export tools. Having used blender briefly, I could not quite imagine why I would want to go back from Gmax / Max to a non-standard tool.

The gradient would seem to be converting FSX creations into Xplane or Flightgear. There is heaps of content for FSn, and not so much for the other two platforms.

Therefore: mdl import --> obj or ac3 export (or whatever)

Hi,

I thought the script mentioned here in this thread also did FSX MDL import. But it is a long time ago I looked at it.

Else you might want to look at my ModelConverterX tool. It can convert objects into formats like 3DS or Wavefront OBJ. Those you should be able to load in Blender as well. Or if you want to go to FlightGear or X-Plane you can also directly export to AC3 or X-Plane OBJ.

I haven't quite strayed into X-plane or FG yet. But there seems to be a demand for content ... so who knows.
