• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

MSFS20 Dark textures at certain times of day (Substance Painter)

Had a crack at texturing my model in Substance Painter and ran into some problems that didn't occur when I made a primitive texture in PS. I'm attaching a pic to explain better :)

Basicly the texture I made in PS was acting ok inside FS at all times of the day. It was a pretty basic texture though and I didn't like the quality so I took the time to redo it in Substance Painter. While it's way more realistic and looks great around midday, it doesn't look good in early morning or late afternoon. The model pretty much turns black. My workflow was as follows:

- New project in SP, template: PBR metallic roughness (allegorithmic), size 2048, model in the fbx format
- Bake all the maps except ID
- Paint the texture using default materials mostly
- Export using the profile that Vitus kindly provided (Thanks!)

In Blender:

Here is a picture explanation. On the left PS texture, on the right SP

Any tips how to make that look better?

Did you create & place the 2 other maps in the metallic map or was it just the metallic map from SP? Especially, the AO map?

What Doug said! The AO map is very powerful in MSFS and I am still trying to find a good AO balance in my own project. I actually have the opposite problem where the AO maps turn out too bright and thus everything is extremely lit up. Since a week ago I also switched my workflow around and now bake the AO map in Blender and then import it into Substance, which helped a lot.

Ahh thanks I'll have a look at the AO map and let you guys know how it turns out.
@Pyscen - I did create the 2 other maps but I didn't do anything with them after that. I assumed they'll be placed automatically during the export. I'll look into that as well! Still learning the software :)

Update.
This might come as a silly question but do I have to do something else than bake the textures and then select a preset when exporting? I opened my exported metallic map in PS and it didn't seem like there were other maps in the different channels.

I think you didn't select the right preset when exporting your textures ;)
