• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FSX EDBC Magdeburg-Cochstedt WIP

Hi all,

just a few progress shots of EDBC.

First panorama view of the scenery. The airport layout and the size of the apron area shows that EDBC used to be a soviet air force base back in the 50's and has then been converted to an civil airport over the years...

And these are my airport sign models in detail. The ground illumination effect in front of the signs at night works well and is based on the techniques of TIC's light splash thread :)

Hi all,

a few more progress screens of EDBC.

Completed the buildings of the cargo and logistics area

Modelled some truck trailors and refined my low poly car library

First attempts to get the apron parking spots look like actually used: added a few oil stains, tire skid marks will follow ;-)

More low poly cars in action

Buildings of the surrounding area

The real cargo hall in has been build just a few months ago. It's FS counterpart is placed on custom made ground texture (CG-textures is my friend here)

And the interim passenger hall that I decided to redo completely to add much more details (texture and model wise). It's one of the buildings that is next to the virtual pilots cockpit windows later.

...challenging task today: One lightpole is postioned directly in front of this building. I wanted all objects appear to be lit correctly (highlight/shadows). At the end it took me 3 hours to create and adjust the few night textures but I 'm happy with the result. I think that would be a 30 min task with 3DSmax and texture baking, correct?

Kind of...

Once you get the hang of 3DS Max you could even do that in 15 mins :D

But the thing that you've done that beautiful work with a "less capable" program just makes it even better.

Cheers

Your work is amazing. About the lighting, I think it is possible to do the light in 3dsmax and texture baking on the ground. So you can see the cast shadow from those light. I have done that, so why don't you try that. It is so much fun!.

Hi Tic, yes that looks very good and I'd really really like to try that function. But at the end it's the price tag of a 3dsmax licence...

Wow, this looks absolutely stunning! Didn't know you could get to this quality with SketchUp! Is this going to be pay- or freeware?

AFIK there are plug in's that capable of render from SketchUp but I don't know if there are any capable of render to texture.

That looks amazing.. I didnt know that you could create such an amazing scenery with sketchup.. Did you also create the groundpoly with sketchup?

@Hewe: Sketchup is a very easy to learn and fun to use tool for static scenery modeling. I do my whole project with it, including groundpoly. But when it comes to more advanced tasks - like animation - you need other tools like Gmax.

@Roel: when the project is finished I'll decide whether EDBC might be offered as freeware or as a low budget payware addon

@Tic: I did try some render plugins for SU in the past but didn't check if they had a render to texture feature, will recheck this ;)

Finished the surrounding area of the airfield with a photo scenery image and in the middle: the good old SCASM groundpoly. As I did with the EDAH scenery I placed a sat image as a drawing template in PS and then redrawed every surface with generic textures from cg-textures.com plus several PS layer effects. Tremendous workload, but at the end I get cost free sat-like groundimages...
