• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi,

In FSDS, when I export as an .mdl file, I also get a .XML in the same location. What is it for and what should I do with it. Will it go in my Scenery folder or the texture folder.

Thanks,
Tyler

Hi,

It seems to be a sample XML for placement of the object. It is compiled with bglcomp and turns your mdl and XML in a bgl file. So FS does not use this file directly and it does not go in your scenery project.

This XML file can be used for placement, if you remove the comment code (starts with <!-- and ends with --> ), but the main use is to create a library object BGL file, so you can place the object with programs like Rwy12 or Instant Scenery. That is what the ModelData line is for.

If this is an FS2004 object, all that is required is to run this XML file through BGLComp (drop the XML file onto the BGLComp exe file), and a BGL file will be created. Place this into an active scenery folder. You no longer need the MDL or XML files (except as backups!).

To reduce the number of FS2004 BGL files (if you have created multiple objects), you can either use Library Creator XML, or:

1. Copy one of the XML files and rename it something like MyLibrary.XML.

2. Copy the other ModelData lines to this renamed XML file - place them right under the existing one.

3. Save the XML file.

4. Create the MyLibrary.BGL file as described above.

5. Place this into an active scenery folder (the SCENERY subfolder). Place any textures for the objects in the corresponding TEXTURE folder.

6. Use your favorite library object placement program to add these into FS (Rwy12, EZ-Scenery, Instant Scenery, and ADE are typical programs that will add library objects).

I create a MyLibrary.txt file from a copy of the MyLibrary.XML file (just takes some deleting) so programs like Rwy12 and Instant Scenery will list them by name rather than by GUID.

Hope this helps,
