• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

issues with FSDS

Program has worked fine until recently, whenever I try to create a scenery object file now, I either get

"Failed to create MDL file"

or sometimes

"Unable to create error file"

I am using Vista, and paths in preferences are correct, also I use XToMdl.

Can anyone help me out please?

sorry jpfils, the progrma no longer lets me create an mdl file, now I just get
the "Unable to create error file".
:confused::confused::confused:

Sounds like a permissions issue. Try right clicking FSDS and choose Run As Administrator from one of the tabs.

If that still doesn't work, if it is located in a Program Files folder you may need to move it. Also, if FS is inside a Program Files folder you may need to move that. These moves usually require an uninstall to the new location, although there are ways to save your current folders and use them at the new location.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

I had these issues too. In the preferences menu, make sure the XtoMDL path in the SDK folder is in the \Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\3DSM9\Plugins folder, not the 3DSM7 folder. Also, close notepad/the error log before exporting.

Thanks for the replys, but although I have tried your various suggestions and lookd up the recommended threads I still am having the same issues.

Maybe this more detailed events list will help pinpoint where things are going wrong:
------------------------------------------------------------
Using 32bit Vista Premium

FS DS 3 re-installed to C:\Abacus
FS DS 3.5.1 upgrade installed to C:\Abacus also

Permissions are or appear to be set for this C:\Abacus folder

I run FS Design Studio as administrator

Under Preferences paths to;

1. XToMdl.exe

2. BglComp Path

3. modeldef.xml are set correctly

i.e.

1. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\SDSM9\Plugins

2. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\BGL Compiler SDK

3. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\bin

Program asks me for a name to save as .bgl file in Scenery folder

I get a Generating Scenery drawing code message and then.......................

c:\ prompt window opens but no info is displayed in there (triggered by CreateMdl.bat ??? )

Microsoft Windows opens with
XToMdl.exe has stopped working

2nd Microsoft Windows then opens with
Sending info about problem

Details says these files help describe problem
one just relates to my op system the other is similar to this
C:\Users\****\AppData\Local\Temp\WER84D9.tmp.mdmp

If I click Cancel then the these temp files are not created and an empty _xtomdl_err.log is created.

Finally FSdesign35 window opens with "Failed to create MDL file"

I few things occur to me, that perhaps one of you may be able to clarify;

1. Is my CreateMdl.bat complete as it only has 1 line i.e.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\3DSM9\Plugins\XToMdl.exe" _temp.x /keep
pause

2. Do I have all the required files/programs in the various folders?

3. How can I check that I have the necessary permissions to read and write files into the appropriate folders.

Finally can anyone interpret the temporary mdmp files and possibly help me out?

If you have reached this far, thanks for taking the time to look at all of this.

My path is :

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X SDK\SDK\Environment Kit\Modeling SDK\SDSM7\Plugins

SDSM7 for me, SDSM9 for you...
