• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Moving ADE to New PC

I finally broke down and had a new rig built with WIN10 an SSD and GTX 1050.
I have installed FS9 in WIN10 before so I'm good with that. Touch wood.

Before the old tower died I saved ( to external drive) everything from ADE 1.70: Thumbnails, Projects etc. Over the years I have used Library Object Manager to capture dozens of airport object libraries then created and saved Thumbnails of relevant objects. Also saved all Add On Scenery and individual scenery like from MAIW.

Once I have installed ADE 1.78 is there an elegant way to transfer all this work to the new ADE?
Are their cautions about naming files or path instructions I need to pay attention to?

During the "Import" set up phase, will ADE look for appropriate files or will it only Import from a previous installation on the same computer?

Any words from the wise are appreciated. And Happy New Year all.

Import will import from an existing installation. How did you set up the 1.70 installation? Where are your project files, thumbnails and so on?

Hi Jon. Existing 1.70 was on the old flight PC which died. All the old files are saved to an external drive which I will plug into the new tower. ADE 1.70 was "saved" to the external. but I didn't think that constituted "installation." Everything that was in the folder "ADE 170 Production" was just saved to the external in one shot.

The importer needs a version of ADE that is saved with the file structure intact. This covers the import function. I am not sure how well it will work from 170 to 1.78 since there are a bunch of changes. You can run these safely enough and also the

and probably these

The project settings folder is an issue. It contains hard paths possible to folders that no longer exist. So don't set that. ADE will recreate project settings when you load a project and that should have valid paths

You want to copy your projects (.ad4) to a safe folder separate from the ADE structure, This is because a lot of people have used the default folder inside ADE and the either deleted it or found they can't delete it because of the projects.

Thank you sir. Anything I should know about the apsf files? IIRC Found reference to them someplace a while back regarding project paths and not saving old projects to a new ADE version. I don't trust that memory.

Hard paths. Is it helpful if the new installation set up uses the same path shown in the Project List?

Just picked up the new rig yesterday, so loading FS9, FD9update, SDK components, TrafficTools etc should happen today. Might get to ADE tomorrow.

Thanks for being there.

Just a thought. Since there are a bunch of changes to 1.78 would it be better to install 1.70 in the new rig and do the file import. Then upgrade after the import is complete?

I don't think so. I am going to be unable to help much for a day or so. I have a new pc and data transfer from the old one is about 20 hours. I have to leave them alone to talk 😊

No worries. I'll be busy repopulating the new monster. And staying up late to make sure 2020 actually leaves.👍 Catch up in a few. Happy New Year.

Jon -
Here's the results from the last couple work sessions:

FS9 loads and appears to work fine.

AI Traffic files loaded from saved and work. Compiled with TTools work.

ADE Scenery in Addon Scenery\Scenery load and work with objects showing in flight.

ADE 1.78 opens.

Project list is empty. Did not try to copy and paste old project list.

Saved Projects and XML files to separate folder for the moment.

Library Object Manager can find Objects and Thumbs created over the years. I'm amazed.

ADE Connect feature works.

Can Open Airport from .BGL and Import Bgl. Object footprints show and thumb shows on roll over.

Paths:

D:\FS Design Tools\Airport Design Editor 178\FS9\Projects (for saving projects)

D:\MS Games\Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\scenery

I've test opened two ADE made airports from .BGL and Imported the Objects. Everything displays OK and can add objects.

ADE will Save Airport to D:\FS Design Tools\Airport Design Editor 178\FS9\Projects
but will not compile.

Shows this error.

Reinstalled MSXML per advice on Forums.

Something simple I missed? I hope.
Thanks -

OK - then I am a bit stuck. I recall seeing that I was using 4.0 SP 2. Do you have ant later versions installed? I am on the edge of my knowledge here and maybe someone can chip in

Looks like I can Compile !

There is no option on the install wizard as to where the user can place the MSXML 4.0. So it
is populated all over the computer according to the search results.

In the Custom and Repair options there is no place to change where the MSXML should go.

I Uninstalled it. Then reinstalled. Test Compiled one project, opened FS9 and its all good ! Computers rely on magic I think.

Now . . . . About all those project files. Before I go pasting things into 178, any cautions?

Or SOP / ASTM procedures ?

Never so weird as computers. I think you are good to go if you load your older project files into 1.78

Thanks for all the help so far.
tested two airports. XML and AD4 saved together. Simply copied into Project Folder in 178. No joy.
Do not show up on Find Project List. Added saved apsf file to apsf folder and tested. Zilch.

I can go to File / Open Airport From XML and that works. Then Import XML to get the Objects to show up in ADE 178.
That compiles and will then show up in Projects List. There are over 300 projects, so that's a little awkward.

Copy and Paste apparently isn't the way to go. The Wizard has an Import Project Settings option. But settings to me isn't the same as the actual projects. Thoughts?

delete any apsf files and allow ADE to recreate them. I am not sure I understand about what you are doing - the talk of XML seems off. The bottom line is to use File > Open Airport

1609789883082.png

and select the ADE project file. I would not expect them to show up in the Find Project List. Please test by loading project files directly as in File > Open airport. If that works then you can use Fiel > Save As to move the to a new place. apsf files hold hard coded paths and if you are in the process of migrating then you may just delete them from the original version and let ADE create a new one in the new location. Copy and paste of apsf files is likely to be unreliable. The only files that really matter are the ADE project files (.ad4)

EDIT Tom and I cross posted with the same advice

There is an observation attributed to Edward R. Morrow: "The obscure we see eventually. The obvious takes longer it seems."

That plus an old poor habit of using the Project - Find drop down to retrieve airports that need additional work.
Insert face palm image here.

All working now. Since .ad4 and xml are in same folder that's where that came from.

That you Jon ! and TG for jumping in. You have the patience of a Saint Jon - Great thanks .
