• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

New BGL file is locked?

I was trying to make some parking changes to KBOS. I saved the changes as normal to:

C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Games\FSX\Addon Scenery\ Scenery

When I compiled, file KBOS_SV.BGL was created in the above Scenery folder. However, the file, when listed in Windows explorer, had a "locked" padlock over the file icon. Because of this, the parking changes I made were never shown in FSX. I received no error messages.

It's as if FSX can't read the file (KBOS_SV.BGL) because it is locked(?) Is this possible?

Do you have your FSX installed into any Program Files folder? If so, if you copy the BGL file and paste it on the Desktop does it still have the lock?

Yes, Windows OSs sometimes do not like updating files in Program Files folders. It may show the lock because it is actually using the old file. Thus my suggestion to copy it to the Desktop and see if the lock disappears. If so, you can try pasting it back into the original folder and overwrite the original file.

Ok, tried copying it to the desktop (lock disappeared) and back again to overwrite the original file. Did not work. The file was still locked.

OK, that's your problem, most likely. You either need to get permission to access the FS folder (via Windows permissions within that folder) or move your FS installation outside any Program Files folder.

Yeah, I just looked at the "Microsoft Flight Simulator X" folder properties and it has a grayed out "check" in the "read only" box.

It seem that I have to change the "Read only" attributes of the Flight simulator x folder.

Since I have never done this before (Don't want to screw up the game folder) I am running this command...

attrib -r +s C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\

As instructed here..
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...-the-read-only-or-the-system-attributes-of-fo

I am hesitant on doing this right now. (Don't want to mess up my Flight simulator folders).

If I am doing this wrong please let me know soon.

It may be a pain but as Tom points out the best solution is to install FSX not in a protected folder. It is more than read only attributes I think since part of the problem is that Windows will not allow the user to create or modify files in protected folders like Program Files (x86). The other approach is to turn off User Access Control but that would affect programs and folders other than FSX. AS a point I do not install any software in protected folders or even my C Drive

To change a read only attribute right click the folder and choose Properties. Read only is a check box at the bottom.
