• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

scenery objects issue

Yes I followed step by step the read me, and this is jfk jetway.
I'm pretty sure that Robert and Ray used this jfk jetway to make a sort of jetway bridge. Before the jetway itself.

Does that jetway move, or is it static? Have you ever had an FS9 LIRF?
No it is static, and no, never had fs9 or lirf from fs9.

Yes, fully understood.

Ah!

The last screenshot gives us a small clue. The jetway you’ve circled is not a default (ie Microsoft FSX) jetway. The other one is a default jetway. I don’t recognise the circled one, but it must come from somewhere. Is it perhaps from an FS9 version of the airport? As far as I remember, FS9 didn’t have animated jetways as standard, though there was third-party scenery with animated jetways.

Does that jetway move, or is it static? Have you ever had an FS9 LIRF?

Note that the jetways in my screenshots are different as they are from the GSX Level 2 add-on.

Edit: a thought. Ray in his Readme asks you to install a copy of the JFK jetway textures in the master Textures folder. Did you by any chance add the JFK jetway Scenery folder to the master Scenery folder at the same time? I have no idea if that would produce this result, but it would be good to eliminate this as a possibility.
I wrote an email to Robert on how to modify (update) the airport without the buildings disappearing obviously for my personal use and how to convert an airport scenery from fsx to p3d

I've had a look back through the thread, particularly at the screenshots, and I think what has happened is that the version you had (your original conversion) which only displayed the jetways has somehow become merged with your correctly converted version. The extra jetway is the FS9 JFK model that Ray used to imitate the jetway bridge to the animated jetway, but it has become slightly displaced for some reason. I think the best way of dealing with this is to delete any reference to LIRF in your sim and in ADE, and do the conversion again as a new project in ADE.

In the original scenery made by Robert and Ray thar jetway was placed where it is in the last screenshot. The problem is why this jetway remains there even if I have made the modification? (I have moved the jetway).
I think that the problem could be in the file processed in MCX. With the original placement

This is the comparison between the original and the Ray Smith sceneries. The original FSX/P3D LIRF does not use this static JFK jetway, as you can see from the second screenshot. It only has the animated FSX jetway. So it has come from some version of Ray's scenery that you have on your system.

Edit: Ah - you've moved the jetway? OK, then go back into ADE and make sure that you have not copied and pasted it.

Edit 2 (you can tell I'm writing as I think!): you might be right about the MCX conversion process as the file we've both converted does include object positioning. I think the way around that would be to do the positional modifications in ADE and only then convert the file in MCX. It's worth a try!

On my system I have only the Robert version (wich is converted for p3d). The only thing that I have from Ray Smith is the library object in ADE, I'm sure about that because I have fully reinstalled p3d due to some troubles

Absolutely, tomorrow I'll give a try, the thing that is strange is that when I convert with MCX and then open the file with ade, this one tells me "this is not an airport file. But I'll try, because I think that we are very close to the solution

Tim I made it, I have removed the placement from the original file in MCX and then I have modded, the original file (keeping the file processed in MCX), YEEEEEEEEES I'M HAPPY NOW

Excellent! I’m so glad we got to the bottom of it. Well done for sticking it out.

Now, all you have to do is model the new terminals!

eheheh, I'm here again, I'm trying to build the new terminal, but I have some difficulties.
As you can see in ADE I have placed two parking stands and the respective jetway extension and the jetway itself, removed the ground vehicles and removed the original taxyway lines.
when I open the sim everything that I have previously removed is shown in the sim as you can see in the two images

Yes, I think that goes back to the same issue. I suspect you have to remove these items from the original before converting that file, then import the newly converted file into ADE to make your new terminal. You may then have to run your new obj file through MCX again to cement the new obj positioning, which I think is what you did to remove the old JFK jetway positioning.

The problem is that Ray converted every object in the airfield to a mdl (with position info), then incorporated that into the ad4 file - which also has position info for the default scenery objects it uses (which is every object!) so everything is kind of being called twice. Even the ground markings you circle are made up of default objects (GEN Traffic Line).

I have to say I think you're making an awful lot of work for yourself here. Especially as the basis for this airfield is Ray's parking arrangement which is now many years old, and will have been changed substantially in the intervening years. I think it would be easier to start from the stock airport (which includes all of the unique buildings), and make modifications similar to Ray's (but DO NOT convert the objects to mdls) but which reflect the current layout of the airfield. Alternatively, wait for MK Studios' P3Dv4/5 version of LIRF which includes the new terminals, which must be overdue for release now (and will be available in Orbx Central)! This is their MSFS version: LIRF.

You are right, this is a terrible work, very long and stressful

Life is too short, Davide! You already have a working version of Ray's scenery. I'd leave it at that. If you want to make a more accurate LIRF, either start from the default LIRF or start from nothing. The default LIRF (and Ray's) suffers from using buildings which are now very old and aren't up to the standard which P3Dv5 is capable of displaying. It also (to me) appears that several different people were involved in making it, as the style varies so much across the various buildings. There's also no photoreal background, and I'm willing to bet that the airfield's positioning isn't very accurate (though P3Dv5 tends to be better at this aspect). All of these things could be tackled if you start from scratch, and it would probably be less work than what you are doing now. If it hasn't struck home yet, you are going to have to repeat this process every time you modify Ray's scenery. I really don't think it's worth the effort.

yes actually it's not worth it at all, might as well keep this one or get another one from the internet, maybe newer and updated and try to modify it, as long as it's not closed and difficult to modify like Ray's @GaryGB what do you think about? I have try to magage the situation but it's impossible and robert didn't answer at my mail.

in addition I have noted that my jetway is changed even if I have restore my p3d installation, if I add a jetway it's not the standard one

I don’t know offhand what’s going on there - and I don’t think I want to pursue it further. I am very happy to help getting Ray’s scenery working for P3Dv5, but I’m less comfortable with modifying it beyond what he intended without his input. I really do think that you would be better off starting again if you really want to modify the default scenery to better represent the 2022 version of LIRF, but even then I think the effort would be better spent learning how to make scenery - or the time used relaxing and watching the world go by in P3Dv5 on your newly-working version of Ray’s Fumicino while you wait for the MK Studio version.

I actually have been tempted to try and make the new terminals (I do make original scenery) because I would never be satisfied with the MK version (I don’t like their roofs, which is the one bit of a scenery in a flight sim that you see most!), but taking on a project like LIRF would mean about two years of solid work for one person. And I have a hundred airports I’d rather do before LIRF!

So you are an airport developer?

I make scenery for my own projects, some of which are used by MAIW. I have two airfields that should be released this year, and several others in the pipeline. I’ve also updated several airfields by John Stinstrom for my own use in P3Dv5, including several Italian airfields. Sadly, as John is no longer involved in flight simulation and is not contactable, these updates can never be released.

Some of my work is shown in this thread: https://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/threads/anyone-still-using-sketchup.455697/

@GaryGB what do you think about? I have try to manage the situation but it's impossible and Robert didn't answer at my mail.

My work-flow from the beginning of this 'quest', sought to keep this task as un-complicated as possible for both of us.

I previously indicated a number of requirements intended to keep the process as un-complicated as possible here, and in your prior thread on this topic of freeware LIRF scenery add-on modification.

My recently available time and energy for taking on such projects is rather limited, so I would necessarily be even more adamant as to what files are to be used, where they are to be located. and how they are to be linked as Area layers positioned in P3Dv4 scenery library GUI.

Thus far, you have shown a greater interest in testing other work-flows and configurations to achieve your goal (which is OK).

However, I would not be able to accommodate the investment of time that may be required to deal with such an approach.

Perhaps after you pursue more of your curiosities about how to achieve your goals, your project may merit more of my help.

In the mean time, you might find that Tim may offer very good tips on how to make your own scenery for LIRF ? ;)

GaryGB
