• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

FS2004 Conditional (random) display of model elements

Hi All - It's been a while and things have moved on. Except for me, I'm still on FS2004. I'm wrapping up a model and am interested in hiding elements on a random basis (either per flight or per sim session, I don't mind). I've checked the wiki for XML approaches and thought that I could hide...

    FS2004 Shadow models backgrounder

Hi folks, me again... I'll soon be finally sitting down to make a shadow model for the F900 to remove the daft shadows (3 variations of aerials all at once along the #2 engine top). I wanted to learn a little background and looked at the threads here and elsewhere, the wiki, the FAQ etc and...

    Small disaster

Hi Folks - I was looking to unpack some old models and start work on them when the F900 is complete, and I'd put them onto a USB drive for safe keeping. Well, I also put some photos on there that needed printing and guess what, I lost that USB drive after I'd visited the photo shop. Its only...

    FS2004 Falcon 900

Some LOD-ing to do, 'cos it's an AI aircraft. It borrows much from my earlier Falcon 2000 and saves me a lot of time.

FS2004 Switching optional AI aircraft parts on and off

I have tried doing this before with less than stellar results. On my first model ever made, the DA42 Twin Star for AI, I decided late in the day that repainters could delete the nose camera turret on the MPP version simply by texturing it with a black alpha channel. It seemed like a good idea...

    FS2004 Smoothing a surface...

... without adding polygons. Can it be done? I'm making an AI model of the Dassault Falcon 900 and the top LOD is nearly done, bar the new mappings required when the shapes are finalised. The model looks fine in Gmax but in-sim there are some oddities of shading around the tailplane even...

FS2004 Strange lines from model origin points - in sim

I'm just starting on testing a few new models for AI for the "summer season" and have been ctrl-W-ing through various AI planes to locate the ones I'm developing (testing FDE behaviour etc). The models are fairly rough at present, and I don't know whether it is something in my models or...

    FS2004 Intersection departures for AI

I've been looking at improving runway use/occupancy at a couple of airports, Tahiti Faa'a and also Leeds (worlds apart) using fake runways for intersection departures. At Tahiti there are limited runway exits and no parallel taxiways, so AI backtracks potentially for a mile or more if 22 is in...

    UK airstrips "ICAO" codes.

Now, I know the small airstrips in the UK don't have ICAO codes, and so there are various ways of coding these strips so that FS can fly AI planes into them, but is there a definitive list anywhere that is accepted as a standard? I've just created some RV-8 plans that use a list created by...

FS2004 My flightplans are being reinterpreted by the sim!

I put this post in general chat although it probably also has a place in the more specific forum areas, but it isn't about a fix or a technical question - just a perplexing problem! I'm testing a new model and have compiled some VFR flightplans for it, but it (and other AI also supposed to be...

FS2004 Medical emergency - my head has disappeared!

I'm making an AI RV-8 from my existing model of the RV-4 (this is Vans we're talking about, almost everything is part of another Vans). In doing so the animated pilot's head no longer appears even though it is being built (if I set the viewpoint very close I can be inside the cockpit...

FS2004 Strange AI pattern/circuit behaviour - missing the turn to final etc

I just finished a model for the Druine Turbulent (for AI only) and I'm having some hassles with the FDE. The aircraft doesn't operate in a flight envelope I'm familiar with, lots of low speeds (stalls at 25mph!) and the dreaded taildragger ground handling. I've made the Jodel and RV4 previously...

FS2004 Grouping finally saves the day - for now.

The vanishing flaps-through-a-canopy problem came back yet again, and again I've had to use zbias in the partnames to get the flaps to appear reliably. The problem then was reanimating the renamed flaps, getting the freebie animation back using partnames. My first approach failed. I renamed...

FS2004 Just another ho-hum day with Gmax.

Not writing about a problem, just airing a kind of bloggish account of the past two days' work. A while back I was fretting about a canopy transparency that was hiding the flaps on my AI aircraft, and discovered that grouping some completely different parts of my project made the masking...

FS2004 Nav lights switch off during the day...

...but only on my AI RV4 that is under development. But never mind, I fixed it. I had the wrong entry for the red beacon, and correcting just that one line brought all the lights back. Since all but that entry were correct, it was evidently easier to overlook the one small problem that for some...

    A callsign that I couldn't use.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/toptag/3259321428/ Okay, you're heading into an airport in this and you call up the controller...

    FS2004 Canopy fun

Okay, next model, the RV4. Time to experiment with cockpit transparencies. I managed to get the cockpit glazing to work with the fuselage (not allowing us to see right through the aircraft), so that's not the problem. However when I look at the canopy in-sim I see what look like "glass floors...

Making parts of an AI object vanish

Hi folks I'm looking at possibilities for making an option on my AI Falcon 2000, for the "enhanced vision" system, which adds an external bump on the nose of the aircraft, a little way forward of the cockpit glazing. I'm extremely reluctant to make yet another variant on the standard aircraft...

FS2004 Any reason we don't use string handling in XML?

As a couple of people will know, I had a brief and successful foray into XML coding that activates things at various stages of the flight of AI aircraft. Part of the XML was testing conditions such as airspeed and whether the landing lights were on etc, as means to determine what stage of a...
