• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Can someone build a mod of the new Boeing Defiant copter with push prop ?

Hi.

Long story short : Someone can build whatever model for whatever sim if those main conditions are met :
1) The modeler has the extensive material to translate a real thing into a virtual thing. By extensive, a thousand of photos on his hard drive and wikipedia infos are not enough : where are the extensive engineering plans with cutouts ? Today standards as per modeling quality is quite high when you look at what MSFS can offer. That also means more attention and dedication on the modeler to try to meet that standard.
2) Where is/are the modeler benefit ? Can you pay him/her ? Or is that model among the top 10 he/she loves most ?
3) The modeler has the tools to compile the model. Let's say you want it for MSFS, but the modeler doesn't have that sim, he/she just can't compile the sources, or you want it for P3D, but the modeler has moved on and only has MSFS installed...
4) The modeler has the knowledge and tools to take care of the other 70% of the work apart making the 3D model, which are making a virtual cockpit with working gauges (interior option), the flight model (FDE), the textures and paintkit (Photoshop and hundreds of hours of drawings ?), and troubleshooting and beta testing... Or is respected by the community of contributors enough to get help.
5) Modeling takes time, and there is no real life responsibilities that comes after modeling. That means, one of the main reason why a work in progress model is never finalized and released is the amount of people asking "when ?", then again "when ?", then again "when ?"... You can reduce the pressure on a modeler's workload by either be patient even if it takes dozens of years, or doubling the amount you pay him/her every time you want to ask "when"...

If those conditions are not met, that means you either wait, or do the job yourself.
Hope this short list explains a lot :) Good luck.

Out of interest, how much would you be prepared to pay for such an aircraft? What features would you expect for that price? What is your simulator?

With features, I mean, which of the following would you want:
  • A 3D model that looks like that on the outside, based on publicly available photographs and videos
  • A interior (cockpit) model that looks "realistic" based on best guess and the cockpits of existing similar helicopters for which photographs (and videos) are available
  • A flight model that in theory could match how this helicopter might behave, and achieve the performance figures that are publicly documented
  • A flight model and behaviour that matches the actual prototype as built, or even that of production aircrafts as currently envisaged, obtained through industrial espionage methods. (OK, this is a joke.)
Just a 3D exterior model bolted on some existing aircraft's engine and flight model and is fairly trivial to do, and somebody probably could do it just for fun. But not sure what good it would be for, except to get "cool" screenshots...

Here is a 3D model that somebody made, costs $65, could be used as a basis for the 3D model of such an add-on: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/sikorskyboeing-sb-1-defiant-f608f84167e943d497d303c1c0e312db

The explanation of the license says "You may use the 3D asset worldwide, on all types of media, for all types of use (whether commercial and non-commercial), in all types of derivative works. Others can do the same, as none of our licenses are exclusive. As a rule of thumb, you may not use the 3D asset in a way that allows others to use or access the 3D asset as a stand-alone (for instance, no sub-license or sale by you to others is allowed). For similar reasons, you may not distribute the 3D asset incorporated in a derivative work if the derivative work is too similar to the 3D asset (for instance, you may not print a 3D asset or a slightly modified version of it and sell it)."

I am not sure if including the 3D model of this in a simulator add-on would be against the license, though? At least the glTF format used by MSFS is in a distribution format for 3D assets. And especially if an add-on would essentially be only the 3D model, but otherwise use the configuration of some exiting aircraft, it would have little added value and be a too similar derivative work, right?

Here is apparently the same model, from the same person, with what seems to be a less strict license, and cheaper, too: https://www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/aircraft/helicopter/sikorsky-boeing-sb-1-defiant-helicopter

This means the purchased rights do not allow direct uploading, one may not offer the model in a virtual game, or browser in the .3ds format for purchase, for example (if .3ds is the models native format). Converting the model to gtLF would prevent the "stand alone" derivation, any legal challenge would arise over whether gtLF conversion is considered "slightly modified."
