• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Windows 10

I have now upgraded both my laptop (done some days ago) and my desktop.

Good news that you've installed it successfully!

But the more important good news is/will be that everything is behaving correctly?

I am having a hard time holding off--not sure why. I guess I 'm worried that I'll miss something. Somehow Win 10 is automatically trying to install (I think I responded "not now, but maybe later" to an earlier prompt), but fails with and error message about an update conflict (maybe thankfully) .I've not bothered to investigate too much. Reverts to Win 7 which is fine

I, for one, will be very interested in your impression and (hopefully) lack of problems

Gary

Well I can only say how things are after 24 hours. At the moment I am not really aware that I am not using Windows 7. There are differences of course. I know I am tempting fate but I have not yet found anything that does not work. I don't use tools like GMax and I do not run FS or anything else in full screen mode. Neither do I work with more than one monitor. So I have a simple boring single monitor computer. My desktop transferred as I had it also.

My experience of the failed install was annoying but the roll-back (three times) was flawless. In the end I did use Win 10 on my laptop for a few days in case anything really nasty happens. Bottom line though is that it is going to depend for you on your installation and environment.

I have the same experience as Jon, upgrade a week or two ago now and all my programs are running fine. No problems so far.

But I also mainly use my laptop for development and only sometimes run FSX and without much additional addons.

Well, not so smooth here...that's a real surprise!! My first few tries to install failed at first reboot, and the second failure left my boot files corrupted. Fortunately, but Gigabyte UEFI dual bios has an option "windows boot manager". I thought there might be help there-and when I click the option, the computer boots to windows!!... but I can't boot without going into BIOS..

Per MS, tried to repair with my Win 7 disk but it reports "installed version is newer" and only a complete windows install is offered--not quite ready for that, but I had backed up.

As you did, Jon, I downloaded the ISO and updates, then tried to install Win 10 (rebooting 3 times with my BIOS workaround). And it installed!! But I still can only boot through my BIOS workaround

I like Win 10--all works well (tho I get reminder that my upgrade is available each time I start!!)

Today I'm creating a Win 10 restore/repair USB drive and will see if I can fix this. Alas, I suspect that I'll be reinstalling Win 7 and all my programs next vacation....

By the way, my black screen boot up message

Windows failed to start as a result of hardware (none) or software change.
Directs to use Win 7 disk with repair option (which does not work)

Status: 0xc000000f (an error which occurs when update/installation fails and boot file is corrupted), not unique to any version of windows
File \EFI\Microsoft\Bood\BCD

Most of me wishes I had just stuck with my happily working Win 7. But, even with my crippled install, I really like Win 10. I think everything works well--maybe even better. The interface is fine.

But, if I two days ago what I was looking at, I'd be using Win 7 still....

My only trouble with the Windows 10 installation was that my laptop's CPU (T9300) CPU was deemed incompatible for 10. This is a bug in the "GWX" app that upgrades your windows. There's an update for it that didn't fix anything for me though. The upgrader - and installer, when booting from DVD/USB - always complained about the CPU not supporting "NX" (hardware data execution prevention). I checked the BIOS and the NX(-equivalent) option was enabled.

Disabling it ironically also disabled the check for NX and both installer and upgrader worked.

Win 10 still has software-based data execution prevention, so there's no huge loss of security.

I don't type in the start menu, the internet check has been there since Win 7 and the rest is meh.

Also, I don't get why the "machine ID" thing is bothersome. This has been a part of every Windows activation since XP or Vista or so.

1. Yes that article does bother me.
2. I do type into the start menu.
3. I did not know that Win 7 was doing an internet check.
4. I did not know that the "machine ID" thing has been going on since XP.
5. Seems like I'm way to trusting of MS.

With Win7 and probably earlier (dim and distant past y'know) updates were flagged up by the OS instead of announced on a website. Windows has become more web-dependant in recent years: how many have been on holiday and got back to wait... while Windows updated, rebooted, updated (yawn) again. Windows 10 takes that even further imo: whether this makes it official spyware or a constantly developing service that depends on the Net and a broadband service to keep working properly is your decision. I'm not really worried: there are just too many computers in the world for any organisation to keep tabs on all of them and anyway I'm now wearing 10 layers of tinfoil under my hat (it's summer, can't be too careful!) :rotfl:

Tom, I once carefully wrapped my favorite ball cap in tinfoil. I got a lot of strange looks and rolling eyes while I walked around the grocery store...

Someone was curious enough to ask me what the foil was for. I told him the truth; it keeps my head cooler because it reflects the sun instead of my black cap absorbing the heat.

I'm not going to do any product placement, but surely a man of your discretion and taste would eschew a ball cap for something more stylish? There are a number of elegant options! Might I suggest, for example, your fellow countryman and Indiana Jones star has a very snappy number in his films (and it would hide the tinfoil most effectively). Or in really hot weather the folding Panama is hard to beat, but equally hard to afford!

Heretic, are running Max 9 in Win 10? I'm having some annoying problems that I can avoid if I'm very careful.

This is always going to be a personal choice. We each make our own decisions. We can only be right for ourselves and not for others.

Most of us live in such an interconnected world now that having information sent to an from our computers by applications is and has been just part of life. How many of you have smart phones and now many of you use apps that are talking to GPS, Google, and too many other people to count? I gave up a long time ago worrying about big brother - I have no secrets worth keeping any longer ;) On the other hand I entirely understand that some folks do have concerns about all this and these are also as valid as mine.
