• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

Hi Jon,

someone in the SOH forum asked about airport environment sounds and ADE and that brought up an idea for a feature: in FSX it's pretty easy to add ambient sounds via effect files. All it requires is a visual effect (which can be a "dummy", i.e., without actual visible features) that includes a couple of parameters that reference the sound .wav file and the distance it will fade in to maximum. If ADE had a simple menu with which one could select the sound and sound distance, ADE could then create such a dummy fx file and place it in the effects folder. The user would have to make sure that the sound file (default or custom) is in the main Sound folder. This feature would allow to add ambient sounds to any airfield in a simple fashion.

Cheers, Holger

I like it! Does FS allow you to specify the coordinates of the ambient sound? For instance, a hangar might have some air tools making noises; I wouldn't want this being heard unless you're close enough to the hangar to hear it...

If it does, then add to the feature request that there be a visual representation within the ADE design environment for the location of that sound source.

Forgive me, I haven't researched ambient sounds at all yet, so if that's a dumb question/request...:duck:

Hi there,

the center of the sound emission will be the location you assign to the "parent" visual effect. Also see http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8781 and http://www.fsdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12833 . For more generic sounds (e.g., vehicle traffic on bridges, sea gulls at seaplane base) you don't need a controller but for fine-tuning of volume attenuation it appears that an additional controller effect is required.

Sound effects in FSX are pretty easy to code. The main reason I suggested it as a feature for ADE is that not many developers seem to be aware of this option.

Cheers, Holger

That is a very good idea - I have added it to the design spec that deals with handling effects in ADE. Many thanks :)

This is something that we have looked at. We know how it might be done but at the moment it is not on the active list since it would require a significant amount of work to do it properly. However that is not to say that we are excluding it :)

I'll add a vote for this. It would be nice and others have it although those programs are not as function as ADE!

Heading

One thing that i noticed just a minute ago is that unlike AFCAD221, ADE doesn't show what heading you are looking. It would be helpful to just see the heading rather than have to guess at the heading.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael

Are you aware that the heading you see in AFCAD is the True heading taken from the airport ARP and not the Magnetic heading that the plane shows?

I am just wondering what importance it is to see the True heading on the AFCAD Grid without the Plane attached to the grid through the lock Icon.

ADE does exactly the same thing when the Airplane is locked to the Grid. We display the True heading of the grid in the upper left corner (same as AFCAD) and then you look at the Mag heading with Shift Z when the focus is on the plane.

We also add additional information in the upper left corner such as the precise Lat/Lon in decimal form and the true elevation of the ground.

I am just curious. With AFCAD we did not work with True heading but with Mag headings unless you are writing approach code or placing taxiway signs (which AFCAD does not understand).

Jon will have to say if the headings can display without the connection link locked.

As Jim says, when you are connected to FSX the aircraft heading will be shown in the red numbers at top right. Also the blue numbers contain the true heading of the ADE display so if you rotate the display this number will show the orientation of the display. If you want a heading between points (again true) then you can use a guide line since this displays the heading between the origin and destination of the line.

Jim--

The purpose is that I like to add crosswind runways.

Jon--

I haven't used the SimConnect feature and to be honest, don't really understand how to use it.

Also, I looked in the blue numbers at the top left, and it is only the latitude & longitude..

ADE will automate most of that process. Check the documentation.

Run FSX. Click the Connect Button. ADE connects to FSX and the aircraft location is shown on the ADE Display. You can move the aircraft around in FSX (in Slew Mode) and it moves also in ADE so it can be used for positioning etc.

Also, I looked in the blue numbers at the top left, and it is only the latitude & longitude..

Well it is certainly there if you look at the screen shot below I have highlighted it with a black box.

oh... i thought that it was part of the lat & long.

thanks for the picture Jon (helped alot)

Thanks

Runway Markings

This idea isn't exactly "Top Priority," but is a pretty good idea. What I am proposing is that all runway markings on ADE show when you use them, unlike what is current, only seeing touchdown markings when you have alternate touchdown and precision, etc. selected.

It's just an idea, but I would like it...

Thanks

Michael

Google SketchUp Compatibility

I have tried and tried to make objects with gMax, but I just can't. I found a program called "Google SketchUp." Within 10 minutes I had a building that took me all day to make using gMax. The unfortunate thing, though is that ADE doesn't read Google SketchUp files, so I can't place the object using ADE.

If ADE was compatible with Google SketchUp (.skp) my life would be a whole lot easier

...and to be honest ours would be a whole lot harder ;) We would would have to write the converters to move the Sketchup file to the mdl format and that is outside the design brief of ADE :)

I think the "pro" version of Sketchup will export .x format. I've not seen anyone reporting doing this and running it through xtomdl so I assume it doesn't work all that great.

SketchUp

I downloaded SketchUp Pro and don't know what file type to export it in.

Here is a list of the accepted file types:

.3ds
.dwg
.gxf
.kmz
.dae
.fbx
.obj
.wrl
.xsi

I think what you want for GMax is the .3DS format. Otherwise I think there are .dwg or .cae to .x convertors out there. It has been said that typical 3d warehouse objects have high poly count and simple textures, just the opposite of what i think most FS object designers want.

is there a way (like on Afcad221) to see your approach lights? I cant seem to find it, and if it isn't on there it would be very helpful
