• Which the release of FS2020 we see an explosition of activity on the forun and of course we are very happy to see this. But having all questions about FS2020 in one forum becomes a bit messy. So therefore we would like to ask you all to use the following guidelines when posting your questions:

    • Tag FS2020 specific questions with the MSFS2020 tag.
    • Questions about making 3D assets can be posted in the 3D asset design forum. Either post them in the subforum of the modelling tool you use or in the general forum if they are general.
    • Questions about aircraft design can be posted in the Aircraft design forum
    • Questions about airport design can be posted in the FS2020 airport design forum. Once airport development tools have been updated for FS2020 you can post tool speciifc questions in the subforums of those tools as well of course.
    • Questions about terrain design can be posted in the FS2020 terrain design forum.
    • Questions about SimConnect can be posted in the SimConnect forum.

Any other question that is not specific to an aspect of development or tool can be posted in the General chat forum.

By following these guidelines we make sure that the forums remain easy to read for everybody and also that the right people can find your post to answer it.

P3D v4 Purple artifacts when converting PSD to DDS - help, please!

I am creating my VC textures in Photoshop for an add-on that I'm developing. When I convert my textures to DDS, I get purple artifacts all over the texture and they really show up in P3D. Here are a couple of screenshots from Photoshop. Sample_01 shows the PSD:

sample_01.jpg

Sample_02 shows the same region, but in the DDS:

sample_02.jpg

And finally, Sample_03 shows the same area in P3D, where it's much clearer to see the purple hue mucking up my texture:

sample_03.jpg

I'm early in the texturing phase, so this PSD only has a couple layers and no alpha. I've tried saving the DDS straight out of Photoshop via the NVidia plugin; bringing the PSD into ImageTool and saving out the DDS; and using command line to create the DDS via ImageTool. In each case I get these purple blemishes.

Has anyone encountered this before? Any solutions would be hugely appreciated.

Certain color combinations just do not convert well, and you get such artifacts. Since your color is very close to gray, try removing all color from the image (i.e. grayscale) and try the conversion again. Sometimes things like reducing the saturation may allow you to avoid going all the way to gray.

Thanks for the feedback. I took my texture and converted it to grayscale, then generated the DDS again. This reduced the purple artifacts some, but overall they're still very present.

This wiki article explains why you sometimes get purple colors due to the compression:

Thanks, Arno. All of the colors in the texture I'm working with are grayscale at this point, so I'm guessing they're on "one linear line in the colour space" that's referenced in the article. If that's true, I'm surprised that the compression artifacts come back purple-ish.

Hey there Mike, I figured I'd reach out because we were discussing this the other week and looking at the images, it makes me wonder, what DDS format are you using? If you're using DXT1 or 5, have you tried 32 bit to see if the issue remains?

I agree with Arno, I've also seen something similar with texture compression in my aircraft previously, though 32 bit doesn't have as much of an issue.

Yes, you can make them as 888 32 bit textures and you should get no artifacts.
